Aurora, sometimes referred to as a polar light, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitud at Arctic and Antartic regions. Auroras are produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheris plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate them into the upper atmosphere, where their energy is lost. The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emits light of varying colour and complexity. The form of the aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions, is also dependent on the amount of acceleration imparted to the precipitating particles. Precipitating protons generally produce optical emissions as incident hydrogen atoms after gaining electrons from the atmosphere. Proton auroras are usually observed at lower latitudes. Macam ni you all... aurora ni sebenarnya salah satu fenomena cahaya terang yang boleh dilihat di langit malam. Kebiasaaannya aurora ni ada di kawasan Artik dan Antartika je. Certain saintis panggil Aurora Kutub( Aurora Polaris). Kalau fenomena aurora di utara pula dipanggil borealis atau juga dikenali sebagai cahaya utara. Kalau aurora di bahagian selatan pula dipanggil sebagai Aurora Australis.

Tahukah anda bahawa aurora ini berpunca daripada elektron yang mempunyai tenaga yang diperolehi melalui beza upaya 1,000-15,000 volt. Cahaya ini terhasil apabila elektron ini berlanggar dengan atom di ionosfera, lazimnya pada altitud 80-150 km. Warna aurora ini berbeza bergantung pada ketinggian altitudnya.

Kesimpulannya, Aurora adalah fenomena alam yang menyerupai pancaran cahaya yang menyala-nyala pada lapisan ionosfera dari sebuah planet sebagai akibat adanya interaksi antara medan magnetik yang dimiliki planet tersebut dengan partikel bermuatan yang dipancarkan oleh Matahari.
